There are many reasons that we should eat more vegetables. Aside from the fact that vegetables are delicious, they contain a wide range of healthy vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to grow and remain healthy. Eating a diet based solely on plants can provide us with even more nutrition which can lead to increased weight loss and the ability to manage our weight better, an increase in energy and an overall feeling of good physical and mental health.

With all of the health benefits of a plant-based diet, it can be easy to overlook the many others reasons to choose a plant-based diet in 2020. With that being said, let’s take a look at some of those reasons now.

Here are reasons why you should adopt a plant-based diet this year:

Being Ethical – according to various studies in the 2010s, it was found that farmed animals have some aspects of sentience. They are social beings with unique personalities. Chicken have social status, pregnant cows know how to deal with challenging situations and pigs perceive time. Any animal, including crustaceans and fish feel pain. Farmed animals endure suffering while they are being reared, transported and slaughtered. Farms are unsanitary and overcrowded. During summer or winter, animals must endure additional burden of extreme temperatures, especially because farms lack proper air circulation or heating. Even on allegedly ethical farms, farmed animals still suffer from persistent discomfort and cruelty.

Health Hazards – salmonella, E. coli and other disease-causing microorganisms are common on meat producing farms. Farmed animals are injected with antibiotics to increase their resistance to germs. Antibiotics could remain in meat and be passed to humans. Hormones are also administered to speed up growth. This could cause a hormonal imbalance in the human body, as animal hormones could mimic hormones inside our body. Even if you choose to eat seafood, there’s a risk of mercury contamination, especially if fish are caught near coastal areas.

Environmental Sustainability – as of 2019, about 70 billion animals are farmed and slaughtered to feed nearly 8 billion people. Sustaining that many farmed animals requires 16% of the freshwater supply on Earth and involves about one-third of habitable land on Earth. Yet, animal products only represent of 17% of global calories intake, while plants provide 83% of the remaining. At the moment, global agriculture only uses 12% of Earth’s surface. In 2018, about 1.1 billion people still lack access to freshwater and 820 million people have malnutrition issues. If more efforts are focused on plant-based diets, more people could be fed.

    Totally agree! I’ve recently switched to a vegan diet… mainly because of the health benefits, but also because of the way animals are farmed. It’s completely unnecessary!
