What happens to our bodies when we fast?
The food that we eat gives us our energy, it provides the fuel that is released as glucose, or is stored in our bodies as glycogen. When your reserves of energy & glucose are used up, your body naturally starts using the stored glycogen (fat) as energy. So a Fasting diet can trigger these processes, to burn off any fat stored in your body.
And when the body burns our excess fat, rather than glucose, this can create molecules called ketones, which are produced by the liver from fatty acids during periods of low food intake. These ketones can suppress hunger, which can further help during a Fasting diet.
Is fasting effective?
In principle, Fasting forces your body to burn off excess fat, which can be an effective weight loss technique. In some cases, it takes a period of 3 or 4 days of fasting, on a juice cleanse diet, to see any results. But we always recommend a well balanced diet, and speak to a dietitian before starting a long term diet.
